
Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Career Center Director, the Employer Relations Specialist will proactively and strategically identify, build, cultivate, and maintain professional relationships with local, regional, national, and international employers for the recruitment of university students and alumni.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Advises students and alumni individually and in groups on career paths, internships, and aligning strengths with work environments.
- Connects students/alumni to internships and jobs through career advising and experiential programs with employers.
- Builds employer partnerships using interpersonal skills and market research; sets recruitment goals and strategies.
- Plans and executes career engagement events (career fairs, panels, info sessions, etc.) with campus and employer partners.
- Maintains strong relationships with faculty, alumni, employers, and others; monitors hiring trends to support diverse career opportunities.
- Collaborates with industry professionals to deliver workshops, career fair prep, and career engagement programs for students and alumni.
- Uses platforms like Handshake to communicate with students/alumni and employers; markets events strategically to diverse campus audiences.
- Creates marketing materials, newsletters, and website content on employment and experiential learning for internal and external audiences.
- Represents the Career Center in meetings with student organizations and alumni relations to promote programs and services.
- Attends employer and industry events to build partnerships and stay current on industry trends.
- Coordinates the annual employer luncheon with the Director to network, share updates, and strengthen industry relationships.
- Assesses student/alumni learning and Career Center services by tracking engagement and career outcome data, producing detailed reports for the Director to inform strategic decision-making.
- Evaluates collected data to identify trends, assess program effectiveness, and provide recommendations to meet programmatic needs and improve service delivery.
- Coordinates the assessment of employer relations and experiential learning programs provided to students/alumni, implementing performance measures to ensure continuous improvement.
- Participate in Division of Student Affairs (DSA) functions as required.
- Actively engage in training and professional development opportunities per job functions, and in consultation with the Career Center Director.
- Perform other classification-related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
- Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution, where such are job-related.
- Experience: Possession of this knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area (Employer Relations/ Career Center) to which assigned may be preferred, but is not required.
- A master’s degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Required Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual student development techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
- Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master’s degree in college student personnel, student development, higher education administration, counseling, educational leadership, business administration, counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or a directly related field.
- Previous experience supporting career services, career programs, or experiential learning programs for students/alumni at a college or university career center.
- Ability to build and maintain professional networks.

- Ability to create, plan, and implement career programs.
- Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,540 per month
Classification Salary Range: $5,540 - $7,893 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
