The University

Sonoma State University’s beautiful 274-acre campus is located in Sonoma County wine country, an hour north of San Francisco. The Department

The Department of History offers a 40-unit BA in history, with emphases in world history, European history, and the history of the Americas, in addition to courses with regional and thematic approaches. The department also offers a 30-unit MA in history, with separate thesis and comprehensive exam tracks. Students graduate with discipline-specific skills, including communication, critical thinking, and cultural competencies, which have clear value in a multi-cultural professional world, and which contribute to the building of better local and global communities. Departmental alumni pursue careers in fields that include law, government, teaching, journalism, business, academia, museum curatorship, librarianship, and the non-profit sector, with some continuing their historical studies at the PhD level. 

Faculty members in the department are active researchers and writers, who seek ways for their scholarship to inform their classroom activities and their university and community outreach, including museum curatorship and oral-historical source generation. As one of the very first history departments in the United States to embrace world history, the department is distinguished by a longstanding commitment to diversity among its faculty members and in their scholarly interests and approaches.

Duties of the Position

The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all students and to an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and difference. To this end, the successful candidate will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings. In addition, the successful candidate will be ready to join faculty, staff, students, and administrators in the University’s shared commitment to the principles of ethical exploration, civic engagement, social responsibility, and global awareness.

The successful candidate will lower-division and upper-division GE courses in American history or world history, and upper-division elective courses in the candidate’s area of specialty, as needed.

Professional Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:

A strong commitment to teaching at the BA level.

The ability to teach GE courses in American history and world history.

Applicants must be ABD at the time of appointment; PhD is preferred.

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.

  • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
  • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
  • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
  • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.
